The use of fishing lead, which anglers use to weigh up their fishing line, is unhealthy and bad for the environment and must eventually be completely eliminated. Minister Schouten agreed with Sportvisserij Nederland, Natuurmonumenten, the Unie van Waterschappen and branch organization Divebo.
To ensure that less lead is used in 2021, the retail trade will in the coming period advise more on fully-fledged sustainable alternatives such as stone, glass and iron. There will also be a campaign about the disadvantages of lead reinforcement. In addition, areas must be designated where fishing is no longer permitted.
