Fishing enthusiastics must abandon lead
In 2021 there must be at least 30 percent less fishing lead in circulation. And then further steps have to be taken, according to the parties involved.
There are almost 1.2 million people in the Netherlands who throw a fishing rod one or more times a year. Almost all use lead, which often remains in the water. It is estimated that 54,000 kilograms of lead will end up in fresh surface water every year and another 470,000 kilos in seawater. That is bad for the environment and for the health of humans and animals, says Schouten.

She warns that in particular fishermen who pour their own lead are exposed to direct health risks. They can inhale toxic fumes.
