Unique project in the world: the fish migration river in the Afsluitdijk
With the innovative Fishmigration River, The New Afsluitdijk wants to eliminate the obstacle to migratory fish. Millions of fish are now lying in the Wadden Sea as surfers waiting for the sluices. They smell the fresh water and want to go inside. But the current is usually too strong for these migratory fish to swim up against. A permanent opening via the Fishmigration River Afsluitdijk should make it possible for these migratory fish to swim freely from saltwater to freshwater again. Dutch department of Rijkswaterstaat is also taking measures to stimulate fish migration between the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer lake. Fish-friendly lock management is being used and a fish passage is being constructed at Den Oever. Together these measures ensure that the fish stocks are improved. This video briefly explains how the Fishmigration River works and why it is needed. If you want to know more about the operation, have a look at the page 'How does it work?'
